Project 3- The 3D Model

I have brought my 3D model from the school shop and now have to clean it. When i first got i i thought it wasn't my model as it was covered it a hard gel but i then realised it was inside as this was a protection gel, embarasing. I start pulling the gel away gently then using a toothpick get into the edges of my model to take it out of the small area, what an effort. I then soak my model in  a 2% Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) aqueous solution to soften the gel. I left the model in the solution for about an hour taking it out regularly and scraping the gel of with a tiny metal wire.

Finally it it clean and gel free! I decided to keep the model the colour it is (clear with a slight cream tinge making it slightly less transparent) because it suits the idea of being antlers and i want to take the photo of it on a dark background to relate to my presedents. Here is my final Hi-Resolution image of my model:

Here are some other images of various sides of my model:

Project 3 - Final Render

This is my final render of my three 3DS models. I fixed up the material plenty of times so it was exactly what i wanted and spent a lot of times making tiny adjustments to the positions of the models so that the layout was natural and effective.

Project 3 - Rendering Progress

I have chosen the 3 model  I want to render. The reason i chose these three are because they are the ones that are the most different from each other.
The following are some progress images I saved while doing my rendering:

These are the models i used and the layout i creates. I have made it appear as if each model is coming closer to you. Obviously the one the front it my final model as it is the biggest and closest one.

I
This images shows my adjusting the background and material. I chose a soft creme coloured material called mansory that was appealing to me as when it rendered it looked like the colours antlers could be. The background i chose was a photo pf some gravel. I darkens the images and edited it in photo shop and added it. The reason i chose this was because i wanted a dark background to make the models stand out and to link it to my precedents.

This is an image of my rendering in progress.
This is one of my renders that is close to what i want but I don't exactly like the brightness of the material. I want the models to blend into the background more naturally.

Project 3-Finished Model (Computer)

Here are my final models that i created. Some of them are reasonable similar though they have a variety of different texture e.g, some have sharp edges and other have smooth edges.

This is the model i choose to get printed:

I liked this one the best because it was easily the most intereting and less repetative, It was quite different on each side you look at e.g one side is more like antlers and then there are two sides where the antler shapes overlap creating a square shaped(linked to my presedent of the patter drawing). The sharp edges most suited my precedents and was most suited to the idea i wanted to get across.

Before i could hand in my file there was a few things a have to adjust.
Firstly i have to make sure the size was correct, it has to fit inside a 30x30 cube. So to check this i created a cube that size on 3DS Max and placed it over my model. I then adjusted the size of my model to that you could not see it sticking it out of the cube. Perfect!

Secondly, I have to make it a STL format so that the 3d printer could read it. To do this i first had to check the file for errors using the 'STL check modifier' on 3DS Max. This modifier checked my model for errors including the following:
1. Open edges
2. Double Edges
3. Spikes

4. Multiple Edges

When i check it it ends up having 6 errors. Turns out I have gaps/holes in my model which means some parts are not touching correctly. To fix this I make a small sphere and placed i directly inside the center of the model where you can't see it but it can touch all the parts so it can hold them all together.

I am now all ready to hand im my file for it to get 3D Printed.

Project 3 - Creating Of The Model

I have decided to only use 3ds max because i already have some good models i can use from my last projects and i also find this program a lot easier than solidworks.

I have decided to use parts of the following model to create my 3d model because I can find interesting ways to tessalate it to create a round ball shape.

I found it troubling how to repeat a certain model without doing it manual, so that it would be even. I searched on google to look into it and discovered arrays. I read up on how to use them and what they do and how i could change the different settings to customize my model to exactly how i want it to be. This was so helpful and was such an easy way to create what i wanted.

Project 3- Intro

We have started our final project and this is the task:

Your goal is to conceptualize a theme that responds to some mode of “pattern”, and then
use this theme to develop a 3D printed form.
Your challenge is to build complexity into your designs in a way that exploits the nature of
3d printing. You will use your theme to explore the possibilities of various tools and
methods for 3d form generation. You are to produce 3 [three] refined digital models that
each fit within the dimensions of a 30mm cube, and select one of these to be printed on the
school’s Objet 3d printer.

Through my last two project used deer antlers as my main precedent. So for this project i decided to keep it the same.

Project 2-Final Model

These are my final images of my model:

Project 2-Final Render

This is my final hi resolution render for project two. I have used a wood grain material over my model as it creates an interesting effect when it changes in depth with the jagged edges on my model.
The rough sharp surface was a contrast to the soft green forest in the background. I chose the forest also because the green colour made the wood stand out. The shadow i created appears in the background while also sitting in the front as the face overlaps it.. The reason i made it like this was to have it gradully fall away fronm the from and blend into the black trees in the background. I didn't have any troubles with my render because I knew what I wanted to create and it came out exactly how I wanted.

Project 2-Getting the laser cuts back

Today we got our laser cuts back and they look awsome, though there was one problem. The acrylic was slighlt thinker than 2mm which means my rods don't fit inside the holes i made and they aren't long enough. It was lucky i made spare rods that were longer just in case. I put together my model leaving the paper with the burn marks from the laser cutter on the card pieces because i thought it look interesting (like a wooden texture) compared to one straight colour and suited my model.
I sanded down the rods to fit into the holes so i could put it all together. It took a long time because the sanding made the suface rough which meant it didnt fit in so easily as the acrylic when it was smooth. It also made the rods nontransparent but one they were in you could see difference.

Project 2-Illustartor Laser Cut Profiles

These are my final laser cur profiles produces on illustrator:

Acrylic Profile

Card
I have made enough plane rectaglular faces on the acrylic profile so that i can have 2 for every one card piece.
This mean i will have 9 Card pieces and 18 acrylic this including one clear face for both the front and back. I am very happy with how my card shapes came out as it took a lot of planing to make the face of the deer look realistic when the pieces where placed together. I made the first section a simple cut out of the face shape then second section with a block of card in the center which represents the skulls forehead, this was an important piece which helped make the face appear more 3d as it pops out to the front. The last three pieces where other parts of the face with the last(center) piece only being the eye holes cut. The eye holes are the only aspect which is clear through the entire model, I did this because when you add light the box the light will stream through the two small holes. I added etching on parts of the face to add some texture which was a good decision.

Difficulties:
I found making the rods a little hard as i had to make them using exact mesurements so they would fit perfectly as the laser cuter cuts 0.1mm of each side of a line.

Project 2-Progress

I have made a sketch plan of what sort of model i want to design based on my computerised model.
I have drawn different sections that will be placed on top of each other to form a 3D box. The box will consist of card cut into shapes to form a deer face and antlers in between see through acrylic. When the sections are placed together it will look like a box that has something inside. I made each card section have a different extension of an antler each so that when placed together it forms the whole antler shape that will 'pop' out of the main box shape.

There will be enough pieces all together to form a box with a longer length than the size of the front faces edges e.g . not an exact cube. The height of the front face will be higher than the width as a deer face will fit nicely inside without to much excess on the sides. Each dimension of the model will be visually interesting as i will design it to have the back and front the same and the sides will be symmetrical. When looking from the side the antlers that pop out of the model will have a symmetrical shape with the antler pieces starting short and growing higher into the center then down again. I have made many calculation with measurement to figure out the models exact sizing. This includes the clear rods that will slot inside holes on each face to hold the box together. I decided to make rectangular acrylic rods instead of using round steel rods to they would not be seen as much. This is because I wanted to keep the idea of the box being see through.

I am happy with my design and will start to design at this point and now will begin to create each piece on illustator.

Project 2-Progress-Sketch Models

Here are some sketch models i have made based on what i want my design to look like. They have helped me figure out if my model will look efective and how i am going to put it all together. These are five photos i took of them:

Project 2-Introduction

We have started Project 2 and this was our task:

"Your challenge is to translate and develop your textured iteration from experiment one into
a physical artefact, through the use of laser cutting. You will first need to design how your
model will be divided into 2D profiles and then how the 2D pieces from the laser cutter are
transformed into a 3D construction."

We are given one piece of 2mm acrylic and one piece of 1mm card.
I have chosen to design my most simplest and original version of my model (the basic deer face and antlers)

Here are some draft sketches which are some basic ideas i have for a model. I have sketched multiple different ways i could make my model look effective and exploring ways i could put it together:

Project One - Final Models

FINAL MODEL:

This is my final model rendered. It has a two types of brown wooden materials on the model and is put up against a bright green grass background. The reason I rendered my final model like this is because the model is based on reindeer antlers which have a wood texture and a reindeers habitatt is in the wild (grass fields/landscape).I chose this model for to be my best model as i though it reflected my words clearly:
  • Sharp
  • Organic
  • Detailed

FINAL 81 MODELS:

These are my final 81 iterations models that have been rendered. I put them against a dark background as it made the models stand out. I chose to materialize my models with a white stone because the shadows were most visible.

Project One - 3DS Max Iterations

I have finished my solids works model and have imported in into the program 3ds Max. This is a program that allows you to turn 3d models into all sort of shapes and to edit model to make them look spectacular. We are to use our solid works model and change it to make 81 new models, using modifiers such and bending, twisting and repeating tools.

These are some images of my progress:

Project One - Making Models On Solid Works

To start my project i firts had to do some tutorials in solid works to get the hang if it. This is an image of a camera i made in one of the tutorials:

I then began to make my own model using the image I have chosen (reindeer skull and antlers) with my three descriptive words; Sharp, Organic and Detailed, in mind.
Here are images of my progress during making the model in Solid Works:

Project One - Precedent Images

We had to browse the web and find images of design objects that appealed to us. We were then asked to choose the most inspiring image and assign three words to it. These words describe the chosen  image but will also form the basis of our first project.

These are some images i liked:

Describing words:  sophisticated, edgy, stylised.

Describing words: organic, heirachy, unbalanced.

 Describing words: sharp, detailed, organic.
